A war for independence; plots for personal revenge; and the god Jupiter himself all appear in Cymbeline, one of the last plays Shakespeare loosely on the history of Roman Britain, Cymbeline tells the story of the eponymous British king and his struggles for independence from the Roman Empire. The play also introduces one of Shakespeare’s most popular female characters, Imogen. Cymbeline’s rule was distinguished as a period of friendly relations between the Roman Empire and Britain. Given discrepancies between different historical sources, it remains unclear whether or not an actual conflict ever arose over the payment of tribute to the Roman Emperor, which is a central piece of the drama of Cymbeline.
This strange, dark romance includes two songs composed by Shakespeare that are amongst the most beautiful in the English language.
